The fashion industry has very successfully harnessed technology for the production of diverse fabrics. But this can leave us in a quandary when it comes to wash time! There is nothing more painful than retrieving a favourite item from the wash when it has shrunk, stretched or tied itself in a knot. We feel your pain, so here is a comprehensive guide to washing different fabrics so you can always step out looking fabulous!

Miss Coolio Cotton

Cotton is a widely used natural fibre known for its comfort, durability and breathability.

  • To maintain its quality, wash cotton garments in cold or warm water using a mild detergent.

  • Hot water can cause shrinkage and may fade colours.

  • Tumble dry on a low setting and remove promptly to minimise wrinkles. Tip: don’t tumble dry until bone dry, as this will help your clothes last longer.

  • For heavily soiled items, a higher temperature wash, e.g. 40o can be used occasionally, but frequent hot washes are not recommended.

  • Always check the care label, as some cotton blends may have specific instructions.

Mr Larry Linen

Linen garments are perfect for warm weather due to their lightweight and breathable nature. However, they can wrinkle easily and may shrink if not cared for properly.

  • Wash linen items in cold water on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent.

  • Avoid bleach, as it can weaken the fibres.

  • Air drying is preferable; lay the garment flat on a clean towel or hang it up, ensuring it's reshaped to its original form.

  • If ironing is necessary, do so while the fabric is still slightly damp, using a medium-hot iron on the reverse side.

Mrs Sally Silk

Silk is a strong yarn but it’s also a delicate fabric that requires careful handling to maintain its sheen and softness.

  • Hand wash silk garments in cool water with a gentle detergent specifically designed for delicate fabrics.

  • Avoid soaking for extended periods.

  • After washing, roll the garment in a clean, dry towel to remove excess water – never wring or twist.

  • Air dry by laying it flat or hanging it away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading.

  • If ironing is needed, use a low-temperature setting with a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric to prevent damage.

Mr William Wool

Wool provides excellent insulation but can shrink or felt if exposed to heat and agitation.

  • Hand wash wool items in cold water using a detergent formulated for wool. Gently agitate the garment without wringing.

  • To dry, lay the item flat on a towel, reshape it to its original dimensions and allow it to air dry away from direct heat sources.

  • Avoid hanging wet wool garments, as this can cause stretching.

  • For machine-washable wool, use the gentle cycle with cold water and place the item in a mesh laundry bag for added protection.

The Synthetic Sisters

Synthetic fabrics like polyester, nylon and acrylic are durable and resistant to shrinking but can be sensitive to heat.

  • Wash these garments in cool or warm water with a mild detergent.

  • Avoid high-temperature washes, as heat can cause synthetic fibres to break down over time.

  • Tumble dry on a low setting or air dry to prevent static and maintain the fabric's integrity.

  • Using fabric softeners sparingly can help reduce static cling but may affect moisture-wicking properties in activewear.

Sir Douglas Denim

Denim has been around since the 1600s and is commonly used for jeans and jackets.

  • To preserve its colour and fit, turn denim garments inside out before washing.

  • Use cold water and a mild detergent on a gentle cycle.

  • Avoid overloading the washing machine to ensure thorough cleaning.

  • Air drying is recommended to maintain shape and prevent shrinkage; if using a dryer, select a low heat setting.

  • To minimise fading, wash denim less frequently and spot clean when possible.
