Laundry Through History: The Evolution of Clean Clothes

Imagine a time when clean clothes meant a trip to the nearest river, armed with a rock, your garments and a whole lot of elbow grease. Early civilisations like the Romans and Greeks used streams to rinse out dirt, often relying on manual agitation and natural elements like sand or ashes. Rural and nomadic communities around the world still use this system.
We can only imagine how tiring and time-consuming it was. Washing clothes wasn’t just a chore; it was an event that often took all day. Here’s a quick, fun look at how our laundry lifestyles have become so much easier!
The Invention That Sparked A Revolution
The first patented washing machine emerged in the 1850s and was primarily designed for domestic use, but not for the average home as we know it today. These machines were intended for wealthier households, large estates or even small-scale commercial operations like boarding houses or laundries that catered to affluent clients.
The machines were often hand-cranked and made of wood and metal, and they required significant manual effort and space. Because of their size and cost, they weren’t accessible to most working-class families, so the washboards-and-elbow-grease combo ground its way well into the early 20th century. Servants believed that these early machines caused more effort than they saved.
According to Smithsonian Magazine, the electric washing machine became widely popular in the 1920s, drastically cutting wash day from a full day to just a couple of hours. It was a turning point that gave people, especially women, back their time. Soap, Suds and The Rise of Detergents
Laundry was not only a physically tough task in the past, it also relied on boiling temperatures and harsh soaps made from animal fats and wood ash. In 1907, Persil became the first commercially available laundry detergent in Germany, launching a new era of stain-fighting chemistry.
Post-World War II innovations led to the creation of synthetic detergents, which were gentler on clothes and skin. This shift also opened the door for cold water washing, something that simply wouldn’t have worked with the harsh soaps of the past.
Today, detergent formulas are as complex as skincare, targeting specific stains and fabrics with scientific precision as well as considering environmental factors.
The Rise of The Local Laundrette
With urbanisation and smaller living spaces came a need for shared washing facilities. Enter the laundrette - a place that democratised clean clothes for everyone.
First popularised in the UK and the US in the mid-20th century, these coin-operated havens became community hubs, saving people the hassle of washing by hand or purchasing expensive appliances. Over the decades, laundrettes evolved to include automated systems, card payments and value-added services like folding, ironing and commercial cleaning - all without sacrificing the convenience of walk-in access.
