1. Read the Care Labels (Yes, Every Time)
Each school uniform piece can have different washing requirements. Penrith High’s blazers may need a cold wash or dry clean only, while polos from Kingswood Park Public might be fine for a warm wash and tumble dry.
Top Tip: If you’ve got multiple kids, use a permanent marker to label each uniform with their name and wash instructions so there’s no guessing game mid-week.
2. Sort Smarter, Not Harder
Create dedicated laundry baskets for school uniforms. Keep whites (like St Nicholas of Myra’s shirts) separate from darks (like St Dominic’s navy slacks) to avoid colour runs. Add a mesh bag for socks and smaller items so nothing goes walkabout.
Bonus hack: Do a uniform-only load mid-week to avoid scrambling Sunday night.
3. Pre-Treat the Battlefield
From grass stains on PE shorts to mystery pen marks on button-ups, uniforms take a beating. Keep a stain remover spray or stick handy—one in the laundry and one in the car for after-school surprises.
Soak stubborn stains in cold water with a bit of detergent before washing. For St Mary Mackillop College’s white blouses, add a scoop of oxygen bleach to help lift discolouration without damaging fabric.

5. Wash Cold and Gentle
Most uniforms don’t need hot water. A cold or warm wash helps preserve colours and fabric. Gentle cycles are best for items like Penrith Selective High’s blazers or crested jumpers.
Over-washing can wear clothes out faster, so avoid daily washes unless absolutely necessary. Airing out in between wears can go a long way.
6. Dry with Care
Tumble dryers are convenient, but they can shrink or fade uniforms over time. If you’re drying at home, opt for a low-heat setting. For delicate items (like plaid skirts or branded polos), air drying on a rack is your best bet.

8. Plan Ahead for the Week
Designate a uniform prep day—Sunday arvo is a good time. Wash, dry, fold, and line up the week’s uniforms so you’re not ironing at 6am Monday. Use a hanging organiser or labelled drawers for each day’s outfit (socks and all!).
9. Backup Uniforms = Less Stress
Try to keep at least two full sets of uniforms for each child—especially during winter when drying times are longer. Buying second-hand from the school or local swap groups can save time and money.
